No of course it's not time to nuke Afghanistan, I just wanted to rile Clot with an attention-grabbing headline.
But seriously, what to do in Afghanistan?
The latest atrocity is that five British soldiers were shot dead by an Afghani policeman whom they were training.
RIP to all the brave soldiers.
Now the Taliban have infiltrated the police, we must leave. What can you do with a country
full of loonies like that?
Britain has been trying to tame Afghanistan since the 1800s, and has never succeeded.
Nobody even knows what the aim(s) of the current war is/are. Some say one goal is to destroy the opium trade. That's a noble aim, which I'd support, but it's not happening, is it?
How are these Taliban people otherwise affecting Britain?
Before any accusations of racism are hurled at me I have nothing against Afghanistan and its (peaceful) people. There was a time when I wanted to go there, it is a beautiful country. Many people travelled there in the 60s and 70s, it was the ultimate destination of the so-called "hippy trail". Now I'll probably never go there, unless I join the army.
I think we (and the US) should pull out, we have enough trouble at home and cannot afford this war. Afghanistan is too large a territory for any army to conquer, and so the only other possible solution would be to increase the war effort massively, into something which would have to be about the size of WW2, and nobody wants that.
Any thoughts people, on (non-nuclear) solutions to this?
