You know, before the Black Album came out, I was thinking long and hard what the style of songs were gonna' be coming so close off the back of MGE and
hoped that they would do a really long atmosphic thingy ...... just to throw everything off ......and my wish came true..... brilliant, and now they did again,
dor lil' puddins'
Playing it now ....... Jonty26- old fan !!!!!!!! |

Dark Asteroid - Definately Pinch on vocals!!!!!! Standout track has to be Dr Woofenstein!!!! Agree that some of the album is a bit NOTE but with a bit more
depth! One surprise is no Capt. on lead vocals! Even Monty ha a go!!!!!! Excellent though!!!

I've only listened to it once, the first two tracks didn't grab me. Stand out tracks so far: 'Nothing', 'Perfect Sunday', 'Maid
for Pleasure' and 'Dr Woofenstein' (sounds like classic Brit psychedelia) and 'Dark Asteroid'. I wish 'Magic Potion' was on there
instead of 'LMD'.
'Nature's Dark Passion' is kind of like 'The Beauty of the Beast' Part II. I like it. |

Danger to Yourself is a grower. If anyone remembers the 70s TOTP theme have a listen at 3.05.

The Damned surprised the hell out of me with this album. It's not what I was expecting at all (that is in no way a bad thing). I was betting on a slightly
more psyched-out follow up in the Grave Disorder vein... but what we have here is a whole beast of a different color.
No song on this album sounds like a typical Damned track (if there even IS such a thing). They've explored so many new areas of sound with Dave's vocals venturing into ranges I didn't know he was capable of. Monty's key playing and Captain's guitars are top-notch superb on the album. You have to give the band credit for NEVER repeating themselves and maintaining such a high level of quality. A Nation Fit For Heroes has a great guitar hook and vocal melody. Dr. Woofenstein threw me for a loop! I never could have imagined such a song coming from The Damned. It reminds me of the first time I heard "Grimly Fiendish", though it sounds nothing like that song, it certainly put me in the same state of disbelief at what my ears were absorbing. Great track. Shallow Diamonds is another unexpected turn. The songs marks the first time I've ever heard Dave mention a "candy bar". Haha. Since I Met You is probably my least favorite song on the album due to it's slow loungy feel. My first instincts tell me it sounds like something I'd hear on a Brian Setzer Orchestra album, only not quite as one-sided. I still like the song, I just can't wrap my mind around it just yet. Perhaps it's charm will reveal itself after several more listens. A Danger To Yourself is fun. The organ and guitar interplay make it a great track instrumentally. I wish I knew who the lyrics were about! Maid For Pleasure is a curious one. The lyrics remind me of Adam Ant's "Beat My Guest" mixed with Crass' "Bata Motel". The S&M themed lyrics betray the tone of the song and create an interesting mix. Perfect Sunday has an excellent guitar line. Poking fun of suburban hell is always acceptable. Nature's Dark Passion carries a dramatic feel that we haven't heard out of the Damned since Phantasmagoria. I love Dave's vocals on this song. Little Miss Disaster fits in surprisingly well with the rest of the album. I always liked the guitar riff that opened the track. I think perhaps more people will appreciate this track within the context of this album. Just Hangin' is a good song, but compared to the other moments of brilliance on the album, it's star is rather dim. I do dig the instrumental break in the latter half of the song though. Again, I wish I knew who Dave was talking about on the song. Nothing sounds like a mixture of "Therapy" and "Street of Dreams" with a bit of "Looking For Action" thrown in for energy. Fantastic track. Dark Asteroid sounds like a Captain Sensible solo track... like something from the Meathead album. It gets a wee bit repetitive, but I can appreciate it for what it is. I can't be sure that this is Dave singing on this song. I can't wait for the CD to be released so I can read the lyrics and figure out who a few of the songs are written about. I've listened to it three times now and I'll likely spin it several more times before the day is through. Over all, I give the album a big 4/5. |

There is a hint of CCS at 3:05 in "Danger to Yourself", although I wouldn't have noticed if it hadn't been suggested

this is really growing on me with the possible exception of Nature's Dark Passion - (never really gone for DV's atmospheric, filmic stuff) and LMD
which although i like doesn't quite seem to fit
might be a bit of an odd thought but this feels to me like the album that should have happened after strawberries - and all the better for it - that and the black album for me showed so much musical development - the whole melodic psychedelic thing that they had going at the time which got lost when capt moved on and the mca era turned them into a bit of a panto goth band (that's gonna go down well here i'm sure! dave's voice doesn't sound at all forced and is so much more effective for the fact. Monty, Capt & Pinch all play brilliantly throughout - but (and someone's already mentioned it) Stu's playing is right up there with PG for me - Nothing is a standout for the bass loved Grave Disorder but it felt a little bit damned by numbers to me - this has the feeling of a proper end to end album in the damned style - crammed full of good tracks, enough variation in styles to keep it interesting for an hour, superb musicianship and some real surprises Dr Woofenstein (just awesome) and Dark Asteroid (immense) - if that is Pinch on vocals fair play to you sir - great end to the album - makes me want to go back to the beginning and start all over again and again and again so off i go... |

So haunted by Dark Asteroid.
Was so sure it was Vanian... maybe...but could it be Sensible transposed and even be a high tech morph mix with Vanian in there too. Can't help but think there's something very strange and marvellous going on.

I'm having my first listen, I like it, not gushing yet, I'm sure that will change as I hear it more. Good though. The Dark Asteroid, I like quite a
lot, I'm pretty convinced it's Dave, it's in his speaking register and doing a Bowie/ Pete Murphy does Bowie accent and inflection, and not too far
off his voice in Nation Full of Heros. Surprising though!
Monty does a great job on backing vocals too. It does sound more like a Captain album to me, but since I love his stuff it's not a bad thing. I sort of agree with okapi on the atmospheric film stuff, for me it's been done by them before and very well, it sort of loses it's charm after a while. LMD, I like the song, but have heard it a lot, Perfect Sunday I like too, they both seem to stick out like sore thumbs on this though. Well the thread did say "First Thoughts" and I may change my mind on much of this as I listen a few more times and on different equipment. This, to me has all the markings of a last album ever, or a promo reel of what we can do in case you might need a certain style for something, a tester. Oh maybe it's a what do we have too lose thing? The reason I say this is, is because everyone seems to be indulging themselves on most tracks, getting the big wah-wah in, the filmesque, voice changing, lead keyboards, impressive rythmn sections with fills and opposing tempos. Everyone trying to add their own wishes to every song instead of the album, which I think was well done with GD. I almost hear a Cardiacs influence, and I like them a lot too. I also have a long way to go with the lyrics of Diamonds, obviously a Captain song, did some one ask him for on? The music is brilliant, just can't get into the lyrics, especially sung by Dave who is well known for collecting rarities or growing rarities. But I still like it though!! So back to listening a few more times |
